Archaeology of the Sarasota Region
This program will highlight the extent of Native American settlement around Sarasota County, the Barrier Islands and Beyond, covering 12,000 years of Florida history, and the archaeologists who have studied Sarasota’s ancient past since the 1870s.

John McCarthy, Vice President for Regional History

Mr. McCarthy is passionate about Florida ecology and history. A skilled storyteller, John is well known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the Sarasota region, which he shares through presentations, tours and publications. John is a native Floridian and has lived in Sarasota since 1968. He attended Pine View School and received his BS from Goshen College, Indiana. John worked with Sarasota County Government for 32 years as an Environmental Specialist, County Historian, and Director of Parks and Recreation. John joined the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens team in 2000 when the organization adopted the Historic Spanish Point Campus. John’s work in the community has been recognized in several awards including Hero of History (Historical Society of Sarasota County), Partner of the Year (Jr. League Sarasota), and Citizen of the Year (Council of Neighborhood Associations). John is married and lives in Sarasota.
